About This Photo

Maureen holds a special place in the hearts of both Andaman Turtle Watch and Big Blue! This sub-adult hawksbill was named by Sam Hunt in honour of his mum, Maureen – we love it when sea turtle conservation comes with a personal twist.

So far, Maureen has only been recorded on one other occasion, also near Similan Island 9. This island consistently appears in ATW’s sighting records, which could indicate it’s an important foraging ground and home to a healthy resident hawksbill population. However, it’s too early to draw firm conclusions – we’ll need several years of data before we can confirm patterns like this.

That’s why we’re calling on more citizen scientists to get involved. Every photo and sighting helps us piece together the bigger picture of sea turtle life in the Andaman Sea. For now, Similan Island 9 remains on our watchlist… and who knows what fascinating discoveries await!
