About This Photo
Lydia was one of several turtles identified in a sudden rush at the end of Andaman Turtle Watch’s first season (2024/25) at Koh Tachai. This site isn’t typically known for frequent turtle encounters, but towards the close of the season we began to notice a slight increase in sightings and new identifications – with Lydia being the first of many.
Lydia has been recorded twice in the ATW database so far. The first was from Ciara, who named Lydia at the request of her friends visiting from Koh Tao – keen to experience the delights of diving in the Andaman. The second sighting came from Alex, also at Koh Tachai Pinnacle, who encountered Lydia during the special turtle focused liveaboard trip brought to you by Big Blue x Andaman Turtle Watch.
Lydia has particularly distinctive lateral facial scales, making them relatively easy to recognise. Whether they are a resident of Koh Tachai or simply passing through remains to be seen. Only more dives, more time underwater, and more citizen science submissions will reveal the true story.
