About This Photo

Aurora is an elusive subadult hawksbill, first reported and identified by Big Blue Instructor Ciara Hunt. In a thoughtful gesture, Ciara passed the naming rights over to her guests, who had the joy of experiencing this magical encounter during their dive at Hideaway Bay. This sighting remains the first – and so far only – time Aurora has been recorded in the Andaman Turtle Watch database, meaning there is still so much more to learn about her movements and habits.

Aurora’s encounter is one of just five sea turtle reports from Hideaway Bay, each involving a different individual. In this rare sighting, Aurora was observed feeding among the reef, a reminder of how special and fragile these moments can be. With five unique turtles already documented here, Hideaway Bay may hold more secrets than we realise.

Big Blue Diving Khao Lak looks forward to continuing its work with Andaman Turtle Watch to uncover the mysteries of this beautiful site and to learn more about the turtles that frequent its crystal-clear waters.
