About This Photo
Alicia is a small hawksbill turtle recorded twice at Koh Tachai. She was first reported and named by Big Blue’s own Sam Hunt while teaching a Junior Open Water course. The turtle was named after Sam’s student Alicia, who was observing her very first turtle! That special encounter inspired “human Alicia” to continue her scuba journey and support marine conservation – another turtle hero in the making.
Alicia was among the first turtles logged at Koh Tachai, a site not widely known for turtle sightings. As the first Andaman Turtle Watch season progressed, more sightings emerged – suggesting Koh Tachai may be more important for hawksbills than previously thought. Both times Alicia was observed feeding on algae around the pinnacle, raising questions about whether it serves as a key feeding or shelter site. With continued sightings and data, we’ll work together with Andaman Turtle Watch to piece together these underwater mysteries and work to protect turtles of the Andaman Sea.
