About This Photo
Will has become something of a celebrity in the Similan Islands. This adult male green turtle is most often spotted around Similan Islands 8 and 9 and was named after our very own Will Nesset – making him the first person in the Andaman Turtle Watch (ATW) database to name a turtle after himself… and why not!
Will’s story is also a powerful example of the threats facing sea turtles in our region. He’s frequently seen near the surface at the back of tourist boats, where he is often fed by people. This unnatural feeding has altered his behaviour, keeping him in risky areas instead of foraging naturally. Prolonged time near the surface and close to boat traffic increases the chance of collisions and propeller strikes – a danger made real by the large scar on the rear of his carapace, likely from a past encounter with a boat. It’s a distinctive ID feature, but also a stark reminder of the consequences of human interference.
To reduce these risks, Andaman Turtle Watch promotes a Code of Conduct and offers practical training for boat crews to support respectful wildlife interactions and safer tourism practices.
We’ve also learned more about Will’s social life – he’s often seen with 0027 Tangmo, a female green turtle, foraging together behind boats. Their encounters can include playful circling… and the occasional pushy behaviour from Will.
By supporting Andaman Turtle Watch – reporting sightings, helping share the Code of Conduct, and hosting crew trainings – we’re turning Will’s story into positive change across the Similans. Together we’re building safer waters for turtles and inspiring more partners and citizen scientists to get involved.
