 2013 – 2014 Similan Islands Season Summary

The 2013-2014 Season in the Similan Islands was undoubtedly amazing. Why? Big Fish and lots of them! The Manta Ray Population was as good as ever. For the first time in many years, there was also a huge Whale Shark population. I have been here since 2011. In 2011 and 2012, I didn’t see a Whale Shark. Last year we were spotting several of them every week!

The photos above were taken from Feburary 2014. It was one of the many dives where we spent the entire dive with a Whale Shark. This one was hanging around Koh Tachai all day. However, it is important to note that they didnt start showing up regularly until half way through the season. January 2014 started getting good. Then all the way through from Feburary 2014 to April 2014 was Amazing. So even if this season is going to be as good as last, we still thought it might be a slow start…

2014 -2015 Season is off to a Running Start!

In short, November 2014 has been brilliant. The Similan Islands seems much more alive. There is a lot of fish life, the Coral is recovering in some areas and thriving in others. On 15/11/2014 Richelieu Rock was looking as Colourful as ever and was visited by a Juvenille Manta Ray (see video above). On 17/11/2014 Koh Tachai had 3 Manta Rays all seen on the same Dive! There have been a couple of Whale Shark sightings. They are definitely in the area but we are hopeful their appearance will become more regular as the Season continues.

The Photos above have all been taken between 03/11/2014 and 12/11/2014. They should Hopefully give you an impression of how colourful and alive the Similan Islands are looking right now. It has been a very positive start to the 2014-2015 season. We are all looking forward to December. It Should really be a very Merry Christmas and Happy Happy New Year in Khao Lak.
